The plight of a teacher – A glimpse into the Indian education system

first_imgगुरुर्ब्रह्मा ग्रुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः । गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः ॥Needless to say that everyone is well aware of this hymn, isn’t it? But is that really enough? Is life in India all hunky-dory just like the hymns that we recite?Let us all, for the next couple of minutes, peep into the Life of a Teacher, the cornerstone of our Idealistic Education System.Teaching has been a noble profession for time immemorial. To enlighten one’s path is a deed that is righteous in itself. Then why do the doers still suffer? Are they not worthy of the rewards? Where is the fault then?To blame the system completely would be hypocritical and inappropriate because at times we find the system red-handed and at others, the teachers.Faults of the System• Teachers at private institutes, more often, are not blessed with the rewards that they deserve, even after hours of dedicated lectures and satisfied students. I sense exploitation, don’t you?• They do not have the security of their jobs as such. Any moment or any day can turn out to be their Judgement day leaving them helpless without any job/source of income.• False advertisement by private institutes, to draw the attraction of students like moths to a flame, is not unheard of.• People, with no experience of teaching and no degrees to honk about, are given prestigious posts in place of the geniuses with numerous accolades and degrees to their names. Government has a stricter screening process now. The ones with the degrees are chosen.. but what about their teaching methodology? How long before that is considered as the main criteria for selection?• Teacher-student ratio is the worst and no improvement is seen even when unemployment glares into your eyes and laughs shamelessly at your blunders. Reason? Low education budget.. and where does all the hard-earned money of the citizens go?• Teachers should be respected by their students and colleagues alike and not shown their aukaat by the head of the institutes just because they are responsible for their bread.• Teachers, I believe, should be made responsible for the work that they do best i.e. to teach. Instead, they (Govt. teachers) are bestowed with other administrative stuff like census, mid-day meal reports, election duties and what not. Jiska kaam ussi ko saaje, duja kare toh.… bas bas bahut tezz ho rahe ho!Like I said, the system is not the only target to throw your allegations and accusations at. Teachers, too, are responsible.• Teachers, in order to taste the success with minimum efforts, falsely sparkle their achievements, half of which is not true.• More often than not, the methodology followed by them is not interesting and students tend to skip and hate the subject. It mostly includes exam oriented stuff and rarely conceptual.• Government teachers, owing to the regular payments shoved down their pockets, don’t really give a damn about the syllabus. Aur rahi baat unki training ki… woh toh gayi tel lene. But the cherry of the cake is that despite the decent income, many prefer to also engage in private coaching classes for that extra feather on their hats. Consequences – Bacche jo unke coaching attend nahin karte, unhe marks nahin milta hai.• Teachers ( in general) are not updated on various topics. Hence the trend of old school examiners scares the hell out of students because they are often adamant to adapt to the ever-changing answers. Hence the advice – Bacchon agar old examiner ho toh aise jawab dena. Like seriously?Having said the cons, it would be incomplete and insincere to not mention the contributions of teachers who have given their blood and sweat just to lighten the darkness, likes of whom are, Dr. RadhaKrishnan, Sri Swami Vivekananda, Savitribai Phule, Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and many many many more.• They were, are and will continue to be the only hope in the darkest alleys of people’s minds that have the slightest inclination for knowledge.• Many of them help students study for free. They even bear the finances of their children to give proper education to the homeless, books and other stationery like Anand Sir(Super 30) and Padmashree Rao (tea seller)• Not only do they teach, they even inspire us to learn more, making our hunger for knowledge insatiable, such is their enigma! The teachers and the system are to be blamed for degrading the education of students belonging to a country known for producing some of the brightest minds of the century. The consequence? It reverberates and affects not only the students but also the living of teachers. There are many Govt. and Private teachers, who yet deserve their recognition for the work they do. And yet so many who simply occupy the post undeservingly. And about the students? Well, that core debate remains for another day. For now, let’s ponder over this.last_img read more

Section XI Still Hopeful For Spring Season

first_img Share Section XI is following the recommendation of President Donald Trump and Governor Andrew Cuomo and telling spring sport athletes to remain home until April 29, but the governing body of Suffolk County athletics is still hopeful for a spring season.“If we can come back in the beginning of May, we are fine,” Section XI Executive Director Tom Combs told Newsday. “Even the middle of May is OK. I don’t know all the answers, but I’d say if we come back June 1, we’re done.”Combs said Section XI has plans for four different start dates, beginning April 29, which is the day to which the governor’s school closure has been extended. The only stipulation is spring sports require at least six practices before competition begins. Ten practices are mandatory for baseball teams. Combs said the rules were made considering the health of student-athletes.Section XI Executive Director Tom Combs presenting a school of distinction award to Westhampton Beach Union Free School District Athletic Director Kathy Masterson. Independent/Courtesy Section XI“We are optimistic that if we do come back to school this year that our student athletes will have an opportunity to participate in an abbreviated season,” Section XI said in a statement April 9. “Let’s do our part to flatten the curve and stay home and stay safe.”To keep active and distracted, some teams, like members of the Shoreham-Wading River girls soccer team, have created practice videos where the teammates can be seen virtually passing the ball to one another. The Center Moriches softball team started a challenge on TikTok, and displayed similar simulated hitting and fielding. In an effort to build a championship culture during the COVID-19 pandemic, Rochester-based Gates Chili Central School District Athletic Director Patrick Irving shared an open letter with advice. To advance his programs, the athletic director is celebrating and connecting student-athletes currently missing their spring season, refocusing the budget, continuing education through National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association webinars and other local professional development opportunities, and starting to complete tasks on his district’s to-do list he hadn’t previously had time for.“To start, it is important to have coaches continue to connect with their student-athletes,” Irving said. “Second, this unfortunate situation has created an opportunity. With school closures, my budget is not currently being spent on transportation, athletic training, strength and conditioning services, officials, game supervisors, and more. Once reports are run and athletic administrators know what funds they will have at their disposal, they should begin gathering quotes for purchases that will advance their program and celebrate the student-athletes of the district. It is important that when we do return to normalcy, we do it with a bang.”He’s looked into buying windscreens on fencing with his school’s logo, banners for his gymnasiums, window decals for families, shirts for three-sport athletes, fitness center updates, new uniforms, light pole banners, scoring tables, and floor mats.“Educators should always consider students first,” Irving said. “Personal understanding and continued education are great ways to improve your programming in the immediate.”He said items that can be checked off a to-do list include creating a wall of fame, organizing stakeholders, rereading athletic handbooks, improving student voice, establishing a coach’s corner workshop so they can learn from one another, adding a club, updating record books, and reviewing the athletic department’s website.“Not all these suggestions will be a possibility for every athletic administrator, especially because there are funds tied to many of them,” Irving said. “But simply checking in with your student-athletes will remind them and their families that your athletic department is about community and their overall education. Lead by example and start sharing different posts and emails that simply recognize those student-athletes and their families. In times like these, challenge yourself to think differently.”When it comes to the future of our spring championships, the New York Public High School Athletic Association will have more information on or before April 27.“At this incredibly difficult and unprecedented time, the focus has to be on your health and keeping your family safe,” the New York Public High School Athletic Association said in a statement. “We continue to follow the guidance to health care officials and Governor Andrew Cuomo when it comes to social distancing, returning to the workplace, and what this means to school districts. Until then, please be safe and practice social distancing. Stay home and stop the spread.”[email protected]last_img read more

Unicorn DNA: What All the Best AdWords Advertisers Have in Common

first_img Originally published Feb 18, 2014 4:00:00 PM, updated February 01 2017 Do you believe in unicorns? As an AdWords advertiser, you might be surprised to learn that unicorns walk among us, stealing away impressions and outpacing our performance by two, three, or even six times!AdWords unicorns are fantastical, magical creatures, accounting for the top 1% of all ad clicks in the auction. How do the unicorns do it?We recently analyzed over 100,000 Google AdWords accounts representing $3 billion in annualized spend, in order to identify the traits and characteristics of these standout advertisers. What does it take to be an AdWords unicorn? Our research has given us a pretty accurate idea of the CTRs real advertisers are experiencing. In the following chart, we’ve plotted the average (expected) CTR in orange, for each of the top ad positions:For example, the average CTR for an ad in the top position is just under 6%. If you were achieving a 6% CTR, you would consider that good, right? Yet that’s only average! Some advertisers consider even 2-4% CTRs decent, but the opportunity to aim much higher is there. As you can see by the proliferation of blue dots (each accounting for a single advertiser account, not an individual ad) some advertisers are outperforming the average by far. Those in the very upper echelon, seeing exponentially higher CTRs, are clearly doing something right. Even in the third position, we see an advertiser account with an average CTR nearing 18%, while his average competitor in that position is stuck way down at 3%.This is an AdWords unicorn, winning CTRs six times higher than the average. In the chart above, you can also see the curve required to outperform the average by two or three times. We call those getting 2x CTRs “Awesome Advertisers”; these account for the top 15% of ads in the auction. The top 5%, which we’ll call “Super Awesome Advertisers,” are getting 3x CTRs. The very top of the heap — the crème de la crème, getting 6x higher than average CTRs and making up the top 1% of ads — these are AdWords unicorns. Now that we know what a unicorn looks like, we can deconstruct it and see what these exceptional advertisers have in common, in order to produce unicorn ads of our own:1) Unicorn Accounts Have High Quality Scores Across All KeywordsQuality Score (QS) is one of the AdWords metrics that correlates most strongly with PPC success. Higher QS generally leads to lower costs per click and costs per conversion, as well as better ad placement. In “How to Save Up to 50% on Your PPC With Quality Score,” I explain why spending your time optimizing for QS is definitely a worthwhile investment. In our analysis, we found that the average QS is just 5.1 out of 10; this is a massive opportunity for advertisers willing to put forth the effort!2) They Reduce Wasted Spend With Negative KeywordsAgain, this is a massive opportunity that is sorely underutilized by advertisers. The top AdWords advertisers are incredibly effective at reducing wasted spend through the use of negative keywords. However, we also know that 25% of advertisers aren’t using them at all.Back in September, we looked at ways to reduce wasted AdWords spend, and it’s worth revisiting. Failing to exclude specific keywords in your campaigns results in irrelevant, non-converting clicks.3) They Let Google Do Some of the Work for ThemOh, those clever unicorns. These guys are winning the lion’s share of impressions, literally stealing opportunities for clicks away from their competitors. See the example at right, where the advertiser is appearing for 89% of searches relevant to their ads. That’s huge! They understand that Google really and truly wants to show highly relevant, engaging, quality ads to searchers. If the ads they serve up aren’t a good fit, people don’t click and Google doesn’t make their money. Get Google on your side, serving up more of your ads more often — and in better positions — by chasing unicorns and aiming to be way more than average.4) They Target High-Intent, Long-tail KeywordsThe top 1% of AdWords accounts lean toward long-tail keywords with high commercial intent. They’re chasing the people who are in the right frame of mind to convert and have indicated as much through their query. They avoid non-specific or informational queries and instead focus on branded and local keywords, where the intent is evident.5) They Write Ads That Don’t SuckMost AdWords ads just flat out suck. They’re boring, unemotional, and not persuasive.Top advertisers seek out those opportunities, where all of the top ranking ads are similarly boring and sucky. I call this an AdWords Jackpot — you can walk in there with your killer ad copy and own the results if you can come up with a more emotional, compelling ad.On that note, try Perry Marshall’s Swiss Army Knife structured brainstorming process to help you identify the most powerful triggers for your target market and understand how your brand can tap into them.Bonus Tip: Cut the Dead Weight – Unicorns Don’t Have BaggageIt’s a little-known fact, but in any given account, 5% of the ads account for 85% of the impressions. Top AdWords advertisers are skilled in letting go of the underperformers, which they identify through rigorous testing that can have them comparing hundreds of ads at a time. You don’t have to go at this full-time to get to that level of testing, though. Start small and spend a few hours a week testing, copywriting, and optimizing your account.Remember, unicorns aren’t common; only 1 in every 100 will ever reach this status. This means you need to start testing more ad variations, more often, in order to pick winners to build out on. Don’t forget to share this post!
